The script itself is good, and Max Steiner’s music is absolutely amazing to listen to. Where do I begin to praise this movie! First off, Willis O’Brien’s stop-motion animation of the dinosaurs and King Kong is absolutely first-rate (and, something I rarely say, looks better than CGI I’ve ever seen in any movie). The rest is basically a “Beauty and the Beast” story, with a tragic ending (that I won’t reveal to those who haven’t seen this picture), and is absolutely fantastic. They arrive on a ship that has a really cool second-in-command named Jack (played by Bruce Cabot, who’d later appear in some John Wayne westerns), who starts to take a liking to her, and they all arrive on Skull Island, the place Carl had heard about. He finds Ann Darrow, an out-of-work actress (played wonderfully by Fay Wray), and decides to cast her in the main lead of the movie he’s making. To start off, the story is set during the Depression, and involves a flamboyant director named Carl Denham (played by Robert Armstrong) trying to make a film on an uncharted island. The funny thing about this film is that I found out about it after watching Peter Jackson’s remake (which I enjoyed favorably), and decided to buy it on Blu-ray (since, after all, Blu-ray is the better future of DVDs).
